Mapping Machine Learning

a map of public ML experiments in Pittsburgh

A map of Pittsburgh with pins marking a family Screening tool, a fire risk model, pretrial assessment.

Machine Learning is increasingly being deployed in public settings, often without the knowledge, understanding, or input of the public. These deployments can often have positive effects on citizens (e.g., less traffic through CMU's game-theoretic control of traffic lights), but can also be a source of concern or controversy (e.g., use of crime data for predictive policing, or risk assessment). We hoped to make some of these projects visible by literally putting them on the map, printed and displayed as a poster.
